How to Care for Your
Diane's Grace Candle

A few simple practices will help your candle burn beautifully, last longer, and fill your space with grace — every single time.

The First Burn Is Everything

The very first time you light your candle sets the memory for every burn after. Allow it to reach a full melt pool — wax melted edge to edge — before extinguishing. This prevents tunneling and ensures a perfect, even burn every time.

✦ Step by Step

Before, During & After Every Burn

Follow these simple steps to get the most out of your Diane's Grace candle.

01

Trim the Wick

Before every burn, trim your wick to ¼ inch (6mm). A trimmed wick prevents soot, mushrooming, and an overly large flame. Use a wick trimmer or small scissors for a clean cut.

✦ Pro Tip Trim the wick after the wax has cooled and hardened from the previous burn.
02

Allow a Full Melt Pool

On the first burn, allow the candle to burn until the entire surface has melted to the edges of the jar. This typically takes 2–4 hours depending on the candle size.

✦ Pro Tip Skipping a full first burn causes tunneling — a hole that burns down the center and wastes wax.
03

Burn for 2–4 Hours Max

Never burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Extended burns cause the wick to mushroom, the jar to overheat, and can reduce the quality and safety of the burn.

✦ Pro Tip Set a timer! It's easy to lose track of time when your space smells this good.
04

Extinguish Safely

Use a candle snuffer to extinguish your candle instead of blowing it out. Blowing can scatter hot wax, create smoke, and push the wick off center. If you don't have a snuffer, gently dip the wick into the wax pool and re-center it.

✦ Pro Tip Never use water to extinguish a candle — it can crack the glass jar.
05

Store Properly

When not in use, keep the lid on your candle to protect the wax from dust and to preserve the fragrance. Store your candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, which can fade the scent and discolor the wax.

✦ Pro Tip Keep candles stored upright and away from other fragrances that could affect the scent.
06

Reuse Your Jar

Once your candle has burned down to the last ½ inch of wax, discontinue use. You can clean out the remaining wax with warm water and repurpose the beautiful jar as a storage vessel, planter, or decor piece.

✦ Pro Tip Place the jar in the freezer for 30 minutes — the wax shrinks and pops right out for easy cleaning.
✦ Safety First

✦ Common Questions

Candle Care FAQ

Why is my candle tunneling?

Tunneling happens when a candle isn't burned long enough on the first burn to reach a full melt pool. The wax has a memory and will follow the same path each time. To fix this, burn your candle until the entire surface is liquid before extinguishing.

Why does my candle have white spots or rough tops?

White spots (frosting) and uneven tops are natural characteristics of natural coconut wax candles. They do not affect the quality, scent, or burn performance of your candle — they're simply signs of a natural, high-quality wax. We consider them part of the handpoured charm.

Why does my candle produce soot or black smoke?

Soot or black smoke is almost always caused by an untrimmed wick. Before every burn, trim your wick to ¼ inch. Burning near drafts (fans, open windows, vents) can also cause flickering and soot. Keep your candle away from airflow for a clean, steady burn.

My candle's scent seems weaker — is that normal?

Scent throw can feel weaker if the room is very large or if you've been in the room a while (scent fatigue). Try burning in a smaller, enclosed space for a stronger experience. Also, storing your candle in direct sunlight or heat can diminish the fragrance over time — always store in a cool, dry place with the lid on.

How long should my candle last?

Burn times vary by size:

  • ✦ 2 oz Mini Candle: approximately 12–15 hours
  • ✦ 8 oz Candle: approximately 45–55 hours
  • ✦ 10.5 oz Candle: approximately 60–75 hours

Proper care — trimming your wick and allowing full melt pools — will help you get the maximum burn time from your candle.
